Antique Bhutanese Koma Garment Hook— Silver With Gold Wash
Description
Antique Bhutanese koma — a traditional garment fastener used in Bhutan — comprising two large square-form medallion brooches connected by a handmade alternating-link chain. The chain alternates silver-tone open rings with gold-washed endless-knot (Buddhist knot) links throughout. Each medallion measures approximately 2 inches in diameter and features deeply hand-chased and hand-carved floral and geometric repoussé work with gold-wash overlay on a silver ground; the center of each medallion is set with a small turquoise cabochon stone. The reverse of each medallion is plain silver-tone with a pin-stem fitting for garment attachment, consistent with traditional koma construction. Total outstretched length is 19 inches. Unmarked, but tests for silver. Weight is 96 g. The design, construction technique, and materials are consistent with late 19th-century Himalayan/Bhutanese silversmithing.
